Photography Tips with CEWE Photographer Pascal Muehlhausen

After spending more time at home during the pandemic, Pascal has summed up his top tips for photographers looking to take the quality of their pics to the next level.

If you’re getting used to your camera, want to develop your composition skills or fancy creating some alternative stock photography for social media accounts or a website, then there are some great ways to use objects you can find anywhere in your home.

Say you’re taking a picture of a plant. Take a look around your home and gather together some interesting objects that are made of different materials (e.g. a glass), colours (e.g. a plastic lid) or shapes (e.g. a knife). Set up the frame with the plant and put these other objects slightly in front of the lens. Change the range and angle to create alternative effects on photos suitable for a range of uses, including in a CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

If you’re looking to get creative or improve your skills, why not start with breakfast? First, build your favourite breakfast – Pascal chose yoghurt, strawberries, blueberries, oats and coconut. Once you’ve made your arrangement and made the plate look as fresh as possible, place it next to a window for some natural light. You can even use foil or shiny food wrappers to reflect the light as you want it.

Then, choose your preferred editing software or app. If you’re editing on your phone, Pascal recommends Snapseed, Mextures, Lightroom or Pixelmator depending on your personal preference. Here, you can crop or adjust the contrast of your picture so your photos are ready to post online or put in your own custom recipe book.

Capture the best of the weather by heading out into your backyard or nearby park. For a bit of summer fun, get some rubber bands and put them around your camera lens, then attach some flowers with long stems to it. Check the arrangement in your view finder and adjust the auto focus to the centre before enjoying a bit of creative summer playtime.

If you’re using a smartphone, select your wide-angle lens, set a ten second timer and lay it in the grass so your picture is framed with the strands. Then, use your volume button to set off the timer and break out your best moves. Jump around the camera, do a handstand, pull some funny faces – whatever you do, keep repeating until you get the creative shots you’re looking for to add to your album or photo gift.
